The Rise of Tourism in the United Arab Emirates

Tourism has become an important part of the economy in many states in the United Arab Emirates, with huge crowds of tourists flocking to the UAE every year. The numbers of visitors expected to come to the UAE in future are even higher than the current visitor numbers, and the rapid development of hotels, resorts and other amenities for tourists in the UAE continues.

The seven states or emirates that make up the UAE are Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Dubai, Fujairah, Quwain and Ajman. The rise of tourism in the UAE has been particularly significant in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The investment in tourism and the resultant growth of tourism in the UAE has enabled states such as Dubai to diversify their economies and to become less reliant on the oil industry. It has also been associated with rapid construction and development in the UAE.

Huge amounts of money have been invested in infrastructure and the creation of luxury amenities, hotels and resorts. Cityscapes in the UAE have undergone dramatic changes in the last few decades, and there have also be a lot of cultural changes in the UAE countries as they have opened up to international tourists.

It is not only the tourist who wants to make a single trip to a hotel or resort in the UAE who has been catered for, but also the buyer who is looking for a new vacation home, or even for a place to retire. Large numbers of new homes have been constructed in the UAE, many of which are intended primarily for the international market.

Much of the rise in tourism in the UAE relies on the attractions of the warm and sunny climate, the beautiful beaches, and the modern developments particularly the luxurious resorts and the vast shopping malls. Shopping is one of the main tourist attractions for many visitors to Dubai, for example. However, there are also some cultural and historic attractions in the UAE.

Elements of the traditional cultures and the Islamic identities of the UAE states remain, but those cities which attract large numbers of tourists and expatriates have become much more cosmopolitan, making it easier for foreigners to enjoy their vacation in the UAE, according to Aljawal's Dubai Travel Guide. For example, while alcohol is not usually consumed in Arab countries, it is available in the hotels and resorts that cater for foreign visitors. Similarly, English is widely spoken in the UAE, although Arabic is the official language.

A number of festivals and events are held throughout the year to attract visitors to the UAE and to generate interest around the world. These events include annual Wedding and Shopping festivals. Wedding tourism has been particularly important in the UAE, where weddings are traditionally very elaborate and important. Many couples who hope to get married in an attractive, exotic destination choose the UAE, where there are large numbers of luxury hotels and venues that offer special services for weddings and newlyweds.
