National
Library in Morocco
A civilized and cultural
Project and essential
addition to
Moroccan Architecture
The
Moroccan Ministry
of Culture
decided
to choose Rabat
city to be the
location of the
building of the
National library
of Moroccan kingdom,
which is an essential
addition not only
to the Moroccan
culture but also
to the Moroccan
architecture as
well.
This
pioneer project
will replace the
public treasury
which has been
in this building
for many years.
Actually, the
national library
building will
occupy not less
than six hectares
with total cost
of nearly 14 million
dollars and that
is according to
the modern standards
of international
libraries.
On
21 August 2000,
the Ministry of
Culture announced
a contest to choose
the best design
of
the building of
the library, in
an attempt to
retain Arab Islamic
architecture that
distinguished
Moroccan buildings.
On the other hand,
the chosen design
will make harmony
between the original
building and the
modern one. By
doing this, the
Ministry of Culture
aims at finding
a great civilized
and cultural symbol.
Two
architects won
the prize that
is 29000$; Rashid
Al Andalusi and
Abdel Wahed Muntaser. Moreover,
the jury headed
by the Minister
of Culture and
the membership
of 12 architects
from Morocco,
France and Canada,
focused on Islamic
standards to choose
the project on
which the building
is going to be
established.
The architect
Abdel Ahad said:
"The most
important idea
taken for granted
in this project
is that it will
play a major role
in the harmony
of the architectural
echelon of the
city. That is
why, the building
will be erected
within a park.
So that it will
be opened and
green-colored
as the case as
the park is.
In
his speech about
the forthcoming
cultural projects
of the ministry
Al Ashari said:
"The erection
of the National
Library will progress
and reshape the
librarian sector
in the whole country,
such as a project
would have changed
the cultural scene
in Morocco".
The
project is one
of a series of
projects like
the Royal Museum
for Folklore,
Casablanca Theatre
and others, the
projects which
are intended to
praise the Moroccan
culture and to
enable the Moroccans
to be indulged
in their times.
Besides being
a cultural and
civilized symbol,
this library will
afford 210 work
opportunities,
and include 170
computers, 650
reading benches
and 700 training
benches.
It
is worth mentioning
to know that Rabat
city, the Moroccan
capital is the
place where Islamic
education sciences
and cultural organization
(IESCO) and other
bodies are located.
